How does superyacht safety and security differ from “normal” commercial maritime?

We find that our superyacht clients are generally more concerned with the risks to be found in port and ashore, rather than those at sea, although all environments are important and there are clearly some areas where transit support is required. Unlike commercial shipping vessels or cruise lines, the majority of superyachts are not supported by dedicated teams ashore whose job it is to constantly assess risk and provide advice. At Dryad Maritime, we provide intelligence to yacht management companies and, in many cases, directly to specific yacht captains or those with direct responsibility for security.

You say you provide bespoke superyacht security solutions. What do you mean by that?

We tailor products to our recipients; analysing the threats from their perspective at sea, in port and ashore as these can and do vary. Whilst commercial seafarers rarely have the luxury of venturing beyond the limits of the terminal or port they are operating at, our superyacht clients need a greater level of detail to explore beyond the limits of their destination port or marina.

What would you say are the most important products/services that Dryad Maritime can offer superyacht owners and captains?

Our most sought after services are intelligence-based risk assessments (transit, area and port), vessel safety monitoring (VSM), foundation intelligence products to enhance awareness and our incident and advisory reports, which deliver timely intelligence on emerging threats and issues. We also offer the Country Risk Map (CRM); a web-based risk map that provides the latest maritime risk related information, both at sea and ashore, for over 100 countries and a managed weather and vessel tracking service that helps captains minimise the impact of weather-related risks to their operations. With all of these, our clients are able to plan diligently and operate safely, as well as train their crews and improve overall confidence and morale of those on board.

What advice can you give to Superyacht captains to keep safe?

We would encourage them to do their homework on their destinations and transit routes, even if they have been to the same place before as things can change and sometime with little warning. Whilst there are relatively few threats in the open ocean, with some notable exceptions where piracy and small-scale terrorism exists, it is an unfortunate fact, that some of the most beautiful places in the world – those that superyachts often visit – are also the most dangerous places in the world.
